About

Welcome to my journey: from lieutenant to colonel; from seminarian to parish priest; from young man to grandfather. As an Air Force aviator, I “flew with the eagles” and retired as a “bird colonel”. After Vietnam, I became an Episcopal priest and served parishes from coast to coast. I presided over baptisms, weddings, and funerals and helped people with the crises of life. My wife and I raised two bright and capable children and are the proud grandparents of two grandsons.

As a POW in Hanoi, North Vietnam, I lived in the squalor of prison, chained to the will of the enemy. When I was repatriated in 1973, I was physically free; but the “ghosts of Christmas past” periodically haunted my soul. In order to break the chains of combat and imprisonment, I wrote and published my spiritual autobiography as Unchained Eagle and made it available to others who are seeking to make sense out of combat life and their journey in faith.

In 2007, I was appointed by the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense to the Defense Health Board, advising the Department of Defense on matters related to the physical, psychological and spiritual health of active duty military members. I also consult with the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on matters related to former POWs. In 2009-2010 I served on the DOD Task Force for the Prevention of Suicide by Members of the Armed Forces. Following that, I was appointed to the executive committee of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and was elected to the executive committee of the Military Chaplains Association. In 2012 I retired from parish leadership to take on a new challenge of leadership as Executive Director of the MCA.

In 2017 we moved to San Antonio, Texas to live at Blue Skies of Texas West (Air Force Village II). In "retirement" I have served as interim pastor in four parishes in the Diocese of West Texas. I also serve as National Commander of the American Ex-POWs and on the board of directors of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society.

I have led a very varied career in service to God and to Country; and I continue to serve both from a well of experience and insight.
